This book is good to have on hand, as it discusses gender stereotypes, unemployment, and father son relationships, but it isn t the most captivating story and I can see children getting bored of it, or not really understanding it s subject mat...

This is an emotive and moving story which paints the picture of a young boy coming to grips with the role his unemployed father has in his life The drawings are simple and really help to further the point Quinlan is making with the text I think this book is extremely important in terms of having a positive male role model and recognising that fathers shouldn t always be relegated to a lesser role within a story This book also looks at how to be proud of your family, even if it isn t the perfect family that society would have you believe is necessary.I would advise using this book for any age, but just being careful of the discussions that follow For example, KS1 and younger will be able to understand the themes of empathy and it would hopefully help to open their eyes up to the fact that other people come from varying backgrounds However, a KS2 group may want to discuss the social and economical factors addressed in the book through the unemployment of the father At the same time it would be great to discuss how the father is going back to school to pursue a new dream This would help dispel any myths some children have around adults learning, and you could discuss how even you as a teacher are continuing to learn it s about having that growth mindset and not being narrow minded The illustrations are quite lifelike and detailed, which would appeal particularly to the younger readers who may not be getting all the information present in the...

So I like this book for the obvious reason it is about a dad and not a mum This book explores the emotions and love between a dad and his son which is great for children to access This book also delves into real life problems such as redundancy and having to move due to lack of money Patrica touches on these issues in a sensitive way and I think this would be a fantastic book for PSHE to explore them in a safe environment The drawings are also very life like, rather than cartoon, therefore making it relatable to children and their real lives This book is lovely, however in the eyes of a child could be quite boring It is a great book for children to read and learn from but it is not very exciting, in my personal opinion Nevertheless, it is important to see the gender stereotypes being...

This book was lovely to read and touches on a sensitive topic of Dad losing his job, the family therefore not having much money and having to move to a new house It was emotional and heartwarming Some children, but also many parents, will be able to relate to this story.

A lovely story that looks at how not all dads go to work everyday and some dads are stay at home dads I look forward to using this book in the classroom

It would be a useful book to have in the classroom for the right situation, but it isn t necessarily one I would recommend to a child to read.
